Join us for Cultures in Resistance: an afternoon of workshops, creativity and political education at FMP1, Berlin.

Workshop: Gordon Main, director of London Recruits film, runs a film making session. This session - and across the day - we will work to identify a number of stories that we already know a little about, that would make immersive, exciting and above all widely engaging podcasts, series or film. We will consider the barriers to these stories being told to wider audiences. We will do exercises to locate these barriers and share ideas around how and to what extent they can be overcome. We will be educating each other through sharing lesser known stories that we love, whilst the focus of the discussion will be driven around story structure and why some things work and others don’t.

THE MOVIE

London Recruits tells the little-known story of young internationalists from Great Britain who, in the 1960s and 1970s, heeded the call of the ANC in exile and joined the struggle against the South African apartheid regime. Under the leadership of ANC activists such as Oliver Tambo and Ronnie Kasrils, they traveled to South Africa as seemingly inconspicuous tourists to carry out secret missions and bring hope to a country whose resistance had been brutally suppressed.

Director Gordon Main combines eyewitness accounts, rare archival footage, and elaborately staged reenactments into a gripping documentary thriller about courage, solidarity, and international resistance against oppression. The multi-award-winning film offers a little-known perspective on the global anti-apartheid movement and the people who were willing to risk everything for freedom and justice.

Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with director Gordon Main and original London recruit Norman Lucas.
